Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity helps second graders recognize and sort common suffixes: -ness, -er, -y, and -ly. Use it after students have had practice reading base words and seeing endings. Materials: printed word cards (optional), whiteboard, pencils, and a device for student recordings. For the partner task, provide paper and crayons or devices for a short video. For open-ended responses: a high-quality answer shows the student correctly identifying at least two words for each suffix and explains why that suffix fits (for example: "-ness makes a noun that names a feeling"). For the partner recording, a high-quality response includes clear speech or a clear photo/drawing that shows the sorted groups. Teachers can mark each open response correct or incorrect based on those criteria.
