Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity teaches addition of four-digit numbers using place value and regrouping. It ties math to Diwali themes (diyas, lights, sweets) so students see real-world uses. Use the matching and sorting pages for guided practice before independent work. For the partner activity, prepare paper, pencils, and a few small counters (counters, beads, or small erasers) so pairs can model regrouping with physical tens and hundreds. High-quality answers for open-ended items show clear steps: students should line up numbers by place value, add digits right-to-left, show regrouping (write the carried number), and write the final sum. For explanations, students should describe why they regrouped and where they placed the carried number. Teachers can mark open responses as correct if the student reaches the correct total and shows or explains appropriate regrouping; incorrect if place value or regrouping is missing or the sum is wrong.
